The Netherlands travel to face Germany on Tuesday in preparation for their visit here again in the summer, with the game offering one final opportunity for their managers to have a look at players before they select their Euros squads in May.
The game will be played at Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park, with kick off scheduled for 7.45pm UK time.
The EURO 2024 hosts finally gave their fans something to cheer last time out, with a superb performance in a 2-0 win away to France. It was a long overdue result for Germany, who have not had to play any qualifiers due to their host status, but at times have looked as if they need competitive football to focus. Coach Julian Nagelsmann has been trying to find the right formula and brought Toni Kroos out of international retirement to great effect against France.
Die Nationalmannschaft will be hoping to build on that win, as they have been frustratingly inconsistent stretching over a long period now. From their last ten games, they have won just three, drawn two and lost five, scoring 15 and conceding 19. Their matches over this period have an average of 3.4 goals per game. Germany will be banking on another fast start after Florian Wirtz sensationally opened the scoring after just 7 seconds against France.
Kai Havertz is undergoing something of a renaissance for club and country in 2024, scoring in his last four league games for Arsenal, and he carried that form over with a goal against France, meaning he has two in his last three international appearances. His ability to slot into multiple positions is key to Nagelsmann’s fluid system, and remarkably he has appeared as a left-back, number 10 and striker already in the manager’s short reign.

The Netherlands eventually ran out 4-0 winners against Scotland in their last match in Amsterdam. Despite the scoreline, the Oranje toiled for large periods and were fortunate that Scotland wasted plenty of clear chances. Scotland had lots of success pressing the Dutch high and manager Ronald Koeman was critical of their build-up play afterwards. They played in a 4-3-3 against Scotland but will likely revert to their usual 5-3-2 system in Germany.
Netherlands finished second in Group B behind France in qualification (P8 W6 L2), securing automatic passage through to Germany. On the whole results have been good, with four wins in a row and four clean sheets to boot.
However, since the World Cup the Dutch have struggled against top-level international opposition, losing to France (twice), Croatia and Italy. This game therefore represents a good benchmark to measure the progress of Koeman’s side since their quarter-final exit to Argentina in Qatar. In the eleven games since then, they have won seven and lost four, but six of those wins came against Ireland, Greece and Gibraltar. There have been average of 3.5 goals per game across those eleven games.
The Netherlands have scored in each of the last ten games, however, and will be looking to continue that hot streak here. Key to that will be forward Donyell Malen, who is having a great season with Borussia Dortmund and has eleven goals in the Bundesliga, and scored in the win against Scotland. He also found the back of the net the last time Oranje visited Germany, in a 4-2 win back in 2019.
This historic fixture has always been entertaining, and it should be no different this time around. In their last five head-to-head, Germany have won once, there have been two draws and the Netherlands have won twice, with 20 goals scored across these five games, an average of four per game. Both teams scored in four of those five games.
Germany will be on a high after a good win against rivals France, but the question will be whether they can convert that positive momentum, as they have struggled to do in the past few years. The Netherlands did not play particularly well against Scotland but they should take confidence from ending up comfortable winners and keeping a clean sheet, and have a good recent record against their neighbours.
Having said all of this, OddsNow back the home side to continue their upkeep in form with a positive result in a high-scoring encounter on Tuesday.
