Manchester City look to continue their defence of last season’s treble win as they host Newcastle United in their Emirates FA Cup Quarter-Final.

Kick-off is set for 5:30pm UK time at the Etihad Stadium.

Recent Form

Manchester City

Despite a rampant run of form since returning from the Club World Cup in December, City dropped to third in the Premier League following a 1-1 draw at Anfield against title rivals Liverpool, allowing Arsenal to leapfrog them to top spot.

Since throwing away a 2-0 lead to draw with Crystal Palace on December 16th , Pep Guardiola’s side have won 16 of their 18 games in all competitions, with only Chelsea and Liverpool taking points from the Citizens in that run.

City also remain unbeaten at the Etihad Stadium this season, having not lost in any capacity at home since a 2-1 defeat to Brentford back in November 2022, presenting the difficulty of the task at hand for the Geordies.

City have been relentless in front of goal in this competition especially, with 12 goals in their three ties so far in the FA Cup this season (averaging four goals per game), including six at Luton in round five at the end of February.

A problem for Pep Guardiola could come in the goalkeeping department, as Ederson went off injured on Sunday at Anfield and is set to miss Saturday’s clash.

Although Stefan Ortega has proven to be a more than capable replacement for the Brazilian, the German shot-stopper has only kept two clean sheets in his eight games this season, against Huddersfield Town and Tottenham Hotspur in rounds three and four respectively.

Newcastle United

Newcastle’s season has been ravaged with injuries and inconsistency this season, with the Geordies producing yet another wretched display on Monday in their 3-2 defeat to Chelsea to leave them languishing in 10th.

To rub salt into Newcastle’s wounds, Eddie Howe is set to be without Anthony Gordon for the trip to the Etihad, after the winger was taken off with a knee injury in the first half at Stamford Bridge.

Gordon has had an exceptional season for the Magpies, registering 15 goal involvements in all competitions, including a goal in the league meeting between these two back in January. Howe will be hoping Harvey Barnes will step up in his place after an underwhelming season thus far.

Newcastle also have a miserable record in this fixture, with the Geordies losing their last nine matches at the Etihad and only claiming one victory in their last 12 against City, being the EFL Cup third round back in September.

Howe has also lost all but two in games against Guardiola and has found himself on the losing end of every match against the Spaniard at the Etihad.

However, Newcastle matches always have goals, with the Geordies being involved with the most goals in the Premier League thus far with 107 (59 scored, 48 conceded).

Prediction

City come into this as massive favourites, and its easy to see why. Guardiola’s side’s formidable home record, alongside Newcastle’s awful defensive record in 2024 and away record this season, makes backing the FA Cup holders to secure another visit to Wembley a very likely possibility.
