Manchester City welcome Luton Town to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday as they look to maintain their pursuit of a record breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title. With just a single point separating the top three teams, any slip-ups could prove terminal from here on in.

Luton travel to the Etihad occupying a space in the relegation zone, by virtue of goal difference from Nottingham Forest. The Hatters made life difficult for the champions in the reverse fixture back in October, with City needing a second half comeback to win 2-1. February’s FA Cup clash at Kenilworth Road saw Erling Haaland score five in a 6-2 win.

Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm on Saturday.

Recent Form

Manchester City

Manchester City return to home comforts after a hectic week on the road which began with an impressive 4-2 win at Crystal Palace last weekend before a pulsating 3-3 draw at the Bernabeu in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Pep Guardiola’s team are in typically irresistible form, having last tasted defeat in the Premier League all the way back at the start of December. They haven't lost a home league match this season, with the most recent game at the Etihad being a dominant 4-1 win over high-flying Aston Villa.

Saturday's clash sees the Premier League's third highest scorers in Man City take on the third worst defence in Luton. City have scored 71 goals so far in the league at an average of 2.29 goals per game. Their goal scoring exploits at home are even more imposing as they average 2.38 goals per match at the Etihad Stadium.

Man City have been very solid defensively, particularly at home so far this season. They have conceded an average of 1.00 goals per game, with this figure as low as 0.81 for their home matches.

Luton Town

Luton claimed a vital 2-1 win at home to Bournemouth last time out, just their second league win in 2024. Despite the fact that victories are in short supply, Rob Edwards' team are in there fighting as they look to avoid relegation.

The Hatters are proving to be a team for late goals with 38% of their 45 league goals coming in the final fifteen minutes of matches. In the last month alone, they have scored crucial late goals to claim points against Palace, Forest and most recently Bournemouth. Luton have comfortably exceeded their expected goals figure of 1.12, having netted an average of 1.41 goals per match this season.

Defensively, Luton have struggled, with their 65 goals conceded placing added emphasis on their attackers. They have shipped an average of 2.03 goals per game, with this figure as high as 2.38 for their matches away from Kenilworth Road.

Prediction

Luton haven’t registered an away clean sheet all season and, coupled with Manchester City’s near perfect record of scoring at home, a comfortable win for Pep Guardiola’s team this weekend is the obvious pick. With eight goals in their last two league matches, the champions appear to have found their scoring boots at an ideal time.
