The final day of the Premier League season sees Arsenal take on Everton as they try to secure an unlikely league title.
The Gunners know they have to win and hope Manchester City drop points at home to West Ham. Everton have wrapped up safety comfortably and will look to play the role of spoiler at the Emirates. Kick-off is set for 4pm on Sunday.
Since their home loss to Aston Villa in April, Arsenal have done all they can by winning five games in a row, but another win still may not be enough to claim the title. They are in second with 86 points, two points behind Man City heading into the final day, with a marginally better goal difference, so they know that any dropped points for Man City opens the door for them.
Arsenal have been superb at home all season, and will be looking to go out on a high regardless of the destination of the title. They have won 78% of their home games (P18 W14 D2 L2) with an average of 2.44 points per game, the joint-2nd best in the league. Their form has been built on the best defence in the league; they have conceded just 28 goals all season, with 15 of those coming at home (0.83 per game). Games at the Emirates Stadium this season have averaged 3.39 goals per game.
Leandro Trossard has popped up with some vital goals in the past few weeks to keep the Gunners’ momentum going. He got the winner at Old Trafford last weekend and has also scored in each of Arsenal’s last two home wins against Bournemouth and Chelsea, with his tally now at twelve for the year. He is the third Arsenal player to reach double figures in the league – Bukayo Saka has sixteen and Kai Havertz has twelve – showing how the responsibility has been shared amongst Mikel Arteta’s side this year.
On the whole it has been a very solid for season for Everton, with a strong run of late season form removing any lingering doubts of relegation. They are unbeaten in their last five games and have won four of them, and impressively have only conceded a solitary goal in that run. With one game left, Everton are 15th with 40 points, and indeed if not for their points deductions (-8 in total) they would be sitting in 11th.
The Toffees have found it tough on their travels lately, going without a win in their past ten games. Over the course of the season they have not done too badly, with the 11th best away record in the league (P18 W5 D5 L8). Scoring goals on the road has been a problem, as they have managed just 0.94 goals per game, with only Sheffield United scoring fewer than Everton’s seventeen away goals this season.
In their current winless away run, Everton have scored just five goals in ten games. They will be glad to have Dominic Calvert-Lewin fit as the striker has contributed two goals and an assist in his last three starts.
There is only team with anything to play for here and given the stakes Arsenal should win, but as we’ve seen in the past anything can happen on the final day. Everton have been poor on the road lately and struggled mightily for goals, whereas Arsenal have the best defence in the league and are strong at home. It may not be enough for them to win the title, but OddsNow is backing Arsenal to do their job here and get a clean sheet as well.
