German Darts Grand Prix: Betting Odds & Prediction

The German Darts Grand Prix returns this Saturday at Zenith, Munich on the 30th of March and concludes on Monday 1st April. 

Reigning champion Michael Smith averaged over 102.00 in last year’s final as he defeated Nathan Aspinall 8-5 to win his sixth Euro Tour tournament. 

Tournament Format

The tournament consists of 48 players in total, with the top 16 seeded players advancing straight into the second round which begins on Sunday 31st March. The third round, quarter-final, semi-final and final all take place on Monday 1st April.

Round one to the quarter-finals will be played in a best of eleven leg format, meaning the first player to six legs wins. In addition, the emi-finals and final will be played in a best of 13 legs, meaning the first player to eight legs wins.

There is a total of £175,000 in prize money available. The tournament's winner will receive £30,000 while the runner-up will earn £12,000.

Who will play?

The draw for the event is made on Friday 29th March, 24 hours before the event is set to start. 

Big names such as Luke Humphries, Michale Van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price and defending champion Michael Smith all feature, with the top 16 players in the PDC World Rankings eligible to play in all 13 European Tour Events.

Raymond Van Barneveld, James Wade, Stephen Bunting, Damon Heta and Dave Chisnall, who is top seed, for the tournament, all lineup in the event as the top 16 players from the Pro Tour Order of Merit also qualify and are seeded ahead of the second round.

After winning the first Euro Tour tournament in Belgium, Luke Littler will not compete at this weekend’s German Darts Grand prix following his defeat in the European Tour Card Qualifying Tournament in February.

Who are the favourites? 

World number one and current world champion Luke Humphries is favourite to win the tournament (10/3 at BetFair). “Cool hand” has been in sensational form on the PDC Tour for the past twelve months, winning four PDC Majors including the Grand Slam of Darts. Humphries has also appeared in ten Euro Tour Finals over the past two years, winning five.

Three-time world champion Michael Van Gerwen is always in contention pick up another title and comes in as second favourite (5/1 at PaddyPower). Throughout his career, the Dutchman has dominated the Euro Tour circuit, winning 36 Euro Tour tournaments (28 more than any other player). 

Two-time Major Winner Michael Smith is 18/1 at LiveBet to successfully defend his title. "Bully boy” has won six Euro Tour titles throughout his career and has appeared in at least one Euro Tour Final every year since 2014, with 2019 being the only exception . Smith also hit a nine darter earlier this year in the Players Championship Five and won the first night of the 2024 Premier League.

Prediction

Despite not being at his best in recent weeks, Michael Van Gerwen is a darting great and always thrives when under pressure. The Dutchman has won the German Darts Grand Prix three times out of the last four times he has competed in it.
