Newcastle United struggled with the demands of balancing domestic and European affairs last season. Can the Magpies bounce back in 2024/25?

We take a closer look at the betting markets to find the best value for all matters concerning Newcastle ahead of the campaign's kick-off.

How did Newcastle United perform in 2023-24?

The club returned to the Champions League for the first time in two decades last season. Being placed in a group with PSG, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund left them facing an uphill task though and Eddie Howe's side finished bottom.

A lengthy injury list also hindered their league form. Newcastle ended the campaign in seventh, three places lower than they managed in the previous season.

Swedish striker Aleksandar Isak confirmed his place among the division's best strikers though, totalling 25 goals in all competitions. Young winger Anthony Gordon also made major strides, finishing with the joint-highest amount of assists for the club, alongside midfielder Bruno Guimaraes (10).

What to expect from Newcastle United in 2024-25

No other side had players ruled out through injury as long as Eddie Howe's men last season. Combining that with their first participation in the Champions League for two decades, the Magpies were always going to be facing an uphill task.

Questions also remain over Howe's future at the club. The 46-year-old is favourite to be named as the next permanent England manager after a difficult season with Newcastle in 2023-24.

Nevertheless, there are multiple areas in the starting eleven which needed strengthening, regardless of who's available. Bringing in Lloyd Kelly on a free looks a shrewd move to strengthen their options in the heart of defence. Securing the services of former Chelsea left-back Lewis Hall on a permanent basis also provides a much needed boost in the left-back department.

Sandro Tonali's impending return from suspension at the end of August will surely feel like a new signing for a Newcastle side who will be targeting a return to European competition next season. A run in one of the cups is also a reasonable demand given the quality throughout the side.

Howe's side boast one of the league's best goalscoring forwards in Aleksandar Isak and a midfield maestro in Bruno Guimaraes. Combined with the ever-improving Anthony Gordon, should he remain in Newcastle colours, there's no reason this side shouldn't be sitting among the European places come May.
