Michel Vorm Exclusive: 'Tottenham's problems go deeper than Ange Postecoglou'

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Michel Vorm says the club's current struggles aren't solely down to manager Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs have now suffered eight defeats in their last 10 Premier League matches, including four consecutive losses on the spin.

The latest came with a damning 2-1 loss to relegation-threatened Leicester on Sunday, which leaves Spurs in 15th position and only eight points above the bottom three.

Pressure is mounting on Postecoglou, who is currently the favourite to be the next Premier League manager to lose their job at 4/6 (Bet Victor).

Michel Vorm: Pressure of playing at home is getting to Tottenham players

Spurs' injury issues have been well-documented, with Postecoglou having to contend without first-choice defenders Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

Number one goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is also currently ruled out, forming part of a current 12-man injury list at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Speaking exclusively to Odds Now via 888sport, Vorm insists the current absentees and the ever-growing tension in north London is having a negative impact on the playing squad.

He said: [Their issues] are a lot deeper than the manager. I was at the game versus Leicester and the team feel [the] pressure when they play at home.

"They try hard and show commitment, but it seems everything they try just isn’t coming off. Yes, the manager has to take some of the responsibility [but] the injuries have been a massive blow.

"Both centre-backs being out is a big issue, and having [to play] four goal keepers during the season is difficult. I still say when Ange has all the players back, Spurs can be a force. They’ve won at Man City and Man United this season, so something has worked in these two games."

Poor results has seen backlash from Spurs' fans both home and away.

Postecoglou himself has been involved in several exchanges with vocal sections of the club's support following defeats at Bournemouth and Everton.

Vorm insists now is the time for the squad's leaders to step up and ensure their focus remains on improving on recent results.

"I mentioned that the players are feeling the pressure for sure. It is effecting them as I witnessed against Leicester.

"They need to step up a group and show real courage and determination to get out of this period. In my day at Spurs, we had a tight knit group of players who communicated well.

"We were all in it together and this was evident by the success we had in doing well on the pitch. I am not sure what goes on inside the club with the players, but they need leaders now."

Carabao Cup victory can spare Spurs' blushes in the league

Despite a dismal run of form in the league, one carrot which continues to be dangled in the eyes of Spurs fans is the potential to win their first trophy in 16 years.

Postecoglou's men take a 1-0 lead to Anfield in the Carabao Cup semi-finals next week and are also well-positioned to progress to the next round of the Europa League.

Eyes are on Spurs to see if they can add silverware to their trophy cabinet this season, particularly given the Australian's vow to 'always win' something in his second season.

While Vorm concedes victory in one of the cups won't necessarily be a permanent solution, he admits a winning day at Wembley would provide the club with a much-needed lift.

"[The issues are] deeper than a cup win, but it will do the world of good for Spurs to win the Carabao Cup.

"For us [winning it] at Swansea, it was as if we had won the Premier League. For Spurs, it would be their first cup win in a very long time.

"A trophy can be a big turning point for the club as [chairman, Daniel] Levy has done a good job on the business side.

"Now it’s time for Spurs to deliver on the pitch."

Tottenham are currently available at a best price of 2/1 to win a major trophy this season.

Despite leading Liverpool 1-0 following the first leg, they are still as wide as 13/2 to win the Carabao Cup with multiple bookies.

Spurs are also joint-favourites to win the Europa League alongside Manchester United, both of whom are available at a current best price of 5/1.
