Aston Villa entertain Liverpool in a Premier League encounter at Villa Park this Monday night.

Both top four sides have lost their spark of late, recording just two wins in their previous six Premier League games. Kick-off is set for 8pm UK time at Villa Park.

Recent Form

Aston Villa

Aston Villa have been running on empty recently, but it doesn’t detract from the fact that Unai Emery’s men have had an amazing season overall. It’s Villa’s best top flight finish since the 1995-96 season and their best Premier League points tally since the Premier League first launched in 1992. They may have crashed out of the Europa Conference League at the semi-final stage, losing 6-2 on aggregate to Olympiakos, but they are guaranteed to be playing for a bigger European trophy next season, whatever happens in their final two games.

Villa come into the match having lost three games on the bounce in all competitions, but in terms of Premier League encounters at home, they are unbeaten in their last four, picking up an average of two points per game during those fixtures. That compares to them bagging an average of 1.33 points in their last four league games on the road. Goals have also been an ever-present feature of recent league matches at Villa Park. An average of four match goals have been scored in the Villans’ last four home encounters, compared to 2.5 match goals in their last four on the road.

Villa have the third highest home percentage (72%) where both teams score in the Premier League this season. They’ve only kept one clean sheet in their last 10 league games at Villa Park. It’s amazing when you think they managed to beat both Man City and Arsenal 1-0 at home within the space of just four days back at the start of December. They’ve failed to keep a single home clean sheet against any of the bottom-four sides this season.

Liverpool

Liverpool were relieved to rediscover their winning touch when beating Tottenham 4-2 at Anfield last Sunday. Their title challenge had faltered in the two previous games prior to that, losing 2-0 to Everton and drawing 2-2 with West Ham. Klopp’s Reds may have beaten Spurs, but once again they shipped goals. It was the ninth Premier League game in-a-row that Liverpool had failed to keep a clean sheet and they’ve only kept two in total in the league during 2024.

Similar to Villa at home, Liverpool have the third highest away percentage (72%) where both teams score in the Premier League this season. There have been an average of 3.5 match goals scored during Liverpool’s eight away matches in the league in 2024 and the Reds have conceded two goals in three of their last four league matches on the road.

Prediction

Liverpool ran out cosy 3-0 winners against Aston Villa when the sides clashed at Anfield early in September. Despite Villa running out of gas recently, the Reds have struggled to keep clean sheets on the road, especially in 2024. I can see the Reds coming away with the win, but not being able to shut out Emery’s men for a second time this season.
