Uzbekistan's Madrimov won the vacant WBA super-welterweight title with a fifth-round stoppage of Magomed Kurbanov back in March. The victory saw the 29-year-old become world champion in just his 11th professional fight. However, his meeting with Crawford this weekend marks a huge step-up.
Many consider the American the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet. Not only has Crawford won world titles in three separate divisions but he also became undisputed champion at both super-lightweight and welterweight, making him the first man to do so in two weight classes in the four-belt era.
His last outing saw a nine-round demolition of Errol Spence Jr at welterweight 12 months ago. Opinions were split as to who could come out on top but Crawford put in a generational performance, dropping his fellow countryman three times before a merciful stoppage by referee Harvey Dock.
A rematch looked to be on the cards initially but failed to develop, leading to Crawford jumping up in weight against Madrimov this weekend.
Madrimov is the natural super-welterweight of the two but is only half an inch taller than his American counterpart. Remarkably, it is Crawford who holds an advantage in reach.
In technical terms, the challenger is one of the best the sport has to offer. Crawford is also accustomed to taking on fighters who are bigger in size, the most recent example being his victory over Spence.
Madrimov fights out of the orthodox stance but his tendency to fight with a low lead left hand could cost him. There were many impressive facets to Crawford's win over the aforementioned Spence, but the one which stands out most was his use of the right hook.
All three of his knockdowns in the fight came from his use of the right hand - first dropping Spence with a stiff jab before flooring him twice more with clubbing hooks. The latter's tendency to fight with his hands low was devastating, with Crawford taking full advantage with menacing accuracy.
Madrimov will look to make a fast start and assert himself on the smaller man, but expect Crawford's quality to shine through in the second half of the fight. The American has a proven ability to grind through the gears to force a stoppage, which is exactly what we expect him to do in the later rounds.
Odds Now's Best Bet: Terence Crawford between rounds 7-12 @ 2/1 (Sky Bet)
