The Betting Bunker: Three golf betting tips for the 2025 US Open

Written by: Ross Kilvington

It's time for the third golfing major of the season as the game's biggest stars head to Pennsylvania to battle it out for US Open glory.

Oakmont Country Club plays host to the 2025 edition and our man Ross Kilvington (@Kilvington91) has three fancies from each section of the betting market.

US Open 2025 – key betting insights

The US Open takes place at Oakmont this week for a record-extending tenth time as the best in the world gather for the third major championship of the year.

Scottie Scheffler will be looking to build on his PGA Championship win last month and he is without question the man to beat here.

His main challengers theoretically should include Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau, but there are several players eyeing a maiden major breakthrough at Oakmont.

Sepp Straka has been playing well of late. As too has Joaquin Niemann. Can either of that pair secure a first major title this week?

To do so, they will have to battle lightning quick greens, five-inch rough and a host of strategic bunker placements to get their hands on the trophy.

Oakmont is regarded as one of, if not the, toughest courses to host the US Open and it will challenge even the best this week.

The par 3 eighth hole is set to be the longest par three in major championship history, playing at just over 300 yards. Truth be told, there are no easy holes on the course, though. In 2016, only four players broke par.

Prepare for a brutal set of scoring conditions.

Selection #1 - Bryson DeChambeau - 7/1 (8 places, William Hill)

Bryson DeChambeau claimed his second US Open title in 2024 at Pinehurst No.2 following a dramatic final day.

After McIlroy’s collapse over the last few holes, the American had to par the last to win the trophy. A stunning bunker shot to six feet saw him become a two-time US Open champion.

Should he defend the title at Oakmont, he would join an elusive list to win this title three times. Only Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Hale Irwin and Tiger Woods have won America’s national three times or more.

The LIV Golf star may have stumbled at the Masters, but he came close once again last month at the PGA. He finished T2 after a final round of 70, with only the irrepressible Scheffler proving too good at Quail Hollow.

At Oakmont in 2016, DeChambeau finished T15 in what was his first US Open as a professional, but his eyes will be firmly locked on the prize this time around.

His game is perfectly suited to this championship and should he get off to a hot start, the 31-year-old will be near impossible to stop.

Selection #2 - Joaquin Niemann - 30/1 (6 places, Paddy Power)

There is no doubting that Joaco Niemann is the best player in the LIV Golf League right now. Across eight individual events, he has won four, including once again last week in Virginia.

His lead at the top of the standings is currently 45 points and it will take something special for anyone else to catch him.

Despite this, he has flattered to deceive in the majors thus far. Prior to the PGA Championship, his highest finish was a T16 result at the 2023 Masters.

His subsequent eighth place finish at Quail Hollow indiciates he's finally starting to get his head around the challenge, however. If it weren’t for an errant opening round 74, he may even have challenged on Sunday.

Niemann’s driving is one of his finer qualities, ranking third in distance on the breakaway tour. More impressively I feel, is that the Chilean sits second in terms of Greens in Regulation (74.77%) across his eight events.

Finding greens at Oakmont is imperative to performing well. They are large and undulating – but being able to set yourself up for a birdie chance, or at least a two-putt for par, will go a long way this week.

The 26-year-old finally secured his first top-ten at a major last month and I am backing him to fare even better at Oakmont.

Selection #3 - Harris English - 66/1 (Unibet, 7 places)

Harris English has never missed a cut at the US Open, with his worst finish coming in 2022 when he ended up T61 at The Country Club.

At Winged Foot in 2020, he finished fourth, before going one better at Torrey Pines a year later by securing a third place finish.

In 2023, another top-ten was achieved and English will be hoping that he can go one better than his runners-up effort at the PGA last month.

At Quail Hollow, English topped the field for Greens in Regulation (76.39%), finished third for total birdies (18) and ranked second for total strokes gained (2.956).

If he can replicate these numbers at Oakmont, the American has a very good chance of claiming a maiden major title.

He has already won at a previous US Open venue this year – the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines – and with solid finishes at course such as Riveria and Olympia Fields since 2023, Oakmont should suit him down to the ground.
