Former UFC Lightweight champion Charles Oliveira will face-off against up-and-coming prospect Arman Tsarukyan on the main card of UFC 300. Both fighters will feel that a win could propel themselves towards a title shot.

The card is stacked top-to-bottom with Alex Pereira defending the light-heavyweight belt against Jamahal Hill, as well as the first all-Chinese title fight in the women’s strawweight division between Weili Zhang and Yan Xiaonan. Justin Gaethje will defend his BMF belt against former featherweight champion, Max Holloway.

Recent Form

Charles Oliveira

The former lightweight champion has some of the most impressive accolades in the sport. Oliveria has more finishes in the UFC than anyone (20) and also sits in eighth position for most UFC appearances, with 32. Before his loss to Islam Makhachev, Oliveira enjoyed on an impressive eleven fight winning streak.

Oliveira won the belt against Micheal Chandler after a round two KO, before submitting both Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. Oliveira has KO power, but is a BJJ master, with 62% of his wins coming via submission.

The loss to Makhachev came via round two submission, where Oliveira appeared to struggle with the Russian wrestler. This may be a concern when fighting Tsarukyan.

Oliveira is a fighter with many weapons though, and his output is very high. He has an average submission attempted per 15 minutes of 2.7. Oliveira’s striking output has been very high lately as he out-landed Dustin Poirier 98-69 in just 2.5 rounds. Oliveira has also shown KO power with recent fights against Beneil Dariush and Micheal Chandler, where he finished them in round one and two respectively.

Arman Tsarukyan

Tsyrukyan has been slowly rising through the UFC lightweight rankings, and now sits in the number four spot. His last two wins came via KO in round one against Beneil Dariush and round three against Joaquim Silva. The fight against Dariush saw him knockdown his opponent with a vicious knee before finishing him on the ground.

Tsaurkyan only has two losses in the UFC; against current champion Islam Makhachev and number five ranked Mateusz Gamrot. The fight against Makhachev saw him give the current belt-holder one of his most difficult matchups. Tsarukyan outlanded the Russian 60-47 but Makhachev was able to assert himself with his grappling to win a decision.

Tsyrukyan is a well-rounded fighter with 43% of his wins coming via KO and 24% by submission. Tsarukyan has a very impressive average takedowns landed per 15 minutes of 3.4, but he has never submitted someone in the UFC before, and that will be a tall task against Oliveira.

Tsarykyan has power in his hands, and has shown that in his previous two fights. He also has four knockouts in his previous five. He does have a low number of significant strikes landed per minute of 3.85 and will more than likely try to utilize his grappling.

Prediction

Despite Tsarukyan’s skillset, OddsNow back Oliviera to win this fight. He has shown great submission skills in the UFC and is a danger on the feet. Tsarkyan does have great wrestling ability, but he has not been able to finish anybody on the ground.
