Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal lock horns in the second north London derby of the season, with implications in both the Premier League title race and the race for Champions League football on offer.
Spurs need a win to keep up with Aston Villa in the race for fourth, while an Arsenal victory will keep the Gunners ahead of Manchester City, although the Citizens will have a game in hand.
Kick-off is set for 2pm UK time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Ange Postecoglou's side will need to improve on their last performance if they are to have any hopes of catching Villa in fourth. A 4-0 pummeling away at Newcastle United saw them suffer their eighth league defeat of the campaign.
Spurs will be delighted to return to home comforts this weekend, having won eight of their last nine league games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium compared to just two wins in their last 10 away from home.
Tottenham have also scored in every home league fixture this season, a feat that can only be matched by champions Manchester City, whilst only failing to score twice this season in the league.
Postecoglou’s men also boast a brilliant record in this particular fixture, with last season’s 2-0 defeat at home to Arsenal their first home loss to the Gunners since March 2014. However, Spurs have been susceptible at the other end of the pitch, keeping just two clean sheets in their last 17 games in all competitions, as well as picking up just one clean sheet at home since beating Fulham 2-0 in October (1-0 vs Burnley, January 2024).
The Gunners have got their title charge back on track with back-to-back wins over Wolves and Chelsea, leaving Mikel Arteta’s men top of the table.
But they face their biggest test left on Sunday, and must register successive league victories away to Tottenham for the first time since 1988, whilst securing just their third league win at the archenemy since 2007.
Arsenal’s goal difference took new flight with Tuesday’s 5-0 win over Chelsea, with the Gunners the first team to reach 80+ goals in the Premier League this season, whilst a 16th clean sheet protected their record of the best defence in the division.
Martin Odegaard secured his seventh and eighth assists of the season in the win over the Blues, with the Norwegian now ranked third for big chances created with 16, behind only Mohamed Salah (21), and Heung-Min Son (17).
As we have seen with another title rival in Liverpool tripping up at Goodison Park, derby day is not ideal when in the midst of a title race. Tottenham will be desperate to make sure the Premier League crown does not end up at the Emirates Stadium come May 19th, and thus will be looking to spoil the party here.
But, as we saw when Chelsea travelled to Tottenham in November, Spurs are reluctant to change from their open and expansive style of play, which will fall right into Arsenal’s hands. OddsNow expect the Gunners to continue their brilliant attacking form at their arch-rivals on Sunday.
