Southampton secured an immediate return to the Premier League via the play-offs last season. Can Russell Martin's side avoid dropping back down to the Championship in 2024/25?

Check out our full season preview for the Saints below ahead of the new campaign.

How did Southampton perform in 2023-24?

The Saints were one of the most entertaining sides in the Championship last season. Only Ipswich Town scored more than their 91 goals, but only three other sides in the top half conceded more than Southampton (74) throughout the campaign.

Nevertheless, Russell Martin's men were able to secure immediate promotion back to the Premier League for 2024-25.

Their attacking flair and defensive vulnerabilities saw a dearth of high-scoring encounters, with their league fixtures averaging a whopping 3.16 goals per match. Forward Adam Armstrong finished top in both goalscoring and assists columns with a combined 37 goal contributions.

What to expect from Southampton in 2024-25

Russell Martin's team made for an enthralling watch last season, at both ends of the pitch.

Nevertheless, the Saints were still able to secure a route out of the second division but can Martin's playing out from the back philosophy meet the demands that come with being a Premier League side? It remains to be seen, but the fortunes faced by Vincent Kompany's Burnley side from last season don't paint a pretty picture.

The return of Adam Lallana, now 36, will bring some much-needed experience to the squad who will also be buoyed by the permanent signing of centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Manchester City.

Southampton still look destined for a relegation dog-fight from the offset, though. Questions remain where the goals will come from - striker Adam Armstrong might have bagged 21 in the Championship last season, but only boasts four to his name in 68 Premier League outings.

could very well find themselves back in English football's second tier come May. The crux of the matter may come down to how stubborn Martin is with regards to his playing style.

It may have proved fruitful in the second tier but the Premier League is not as forgiving.
