The countdown to kick-off continues as the European Championships draw closer - but who will emerge with the most assists in Germany?
We take a closer look at the players to watch as they look to lead their nations to European glory this summer.
Manchester City and Belgium’s midfield mercurial is the obvious pick given the numbers he has racked up for club and country in recent years.
Despite featuring just 26 times for City this season due to injury, the 32-year-old still racked up a phenomenal return of 18 assists as his side captured a record fourth Premier League title.
And, given the return of Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku during qualifying, De Bruyne also has a striker capable of making the most of his creative exploits.
Just how far this Belgium side will go in the tournament remains to be seen, but given their opponents in Group E, backing ‘KDB’ to come out on top in the assists charts holds great value at 12/1.
Despite enduring a difficult season at Manchester United, captain Bruno Fernandes remained a rare shining light and ended the campaign with a healthy return of 15 goals and 13 assists.
The Portuguese midfielder stepped up to the plate for Erik Ten Hag’s faltering side and concluded the season with a sublime assist for Kobbie Mainoo in a 2-1 FA Cup final win over bitter rivals Manchester City.
Fernandes has also carried his form over for his country and combined six goals with seven assists during qualifying for a side who finished as the highest-scorers across the continent.
Given the attacking prowess boasted in Portugal’s ranks, Fernandes is another solid shout to rank high in the assists column.
The talent of Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has been clear to see for a while now but the 24-year-old comes into the tournament off the back of a breakout year at club level.
His season not only culminated in a record fourth consecutive Premier League title but also with him being crowned the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year for 2023/24.
Totalling a whopping 27 goals and 12 assists, Foden stepped up to the mantle in De Bruyne’s absence to reassert himself as one of the standout talents across the continent.
The exact position he will play in Germany is unclear - he has proven his adeptness on both wings and in central roles - but regardless of where he pops up, Foden’s creative utilities combined with Harry Kane’s goal scoring exploits may finally see football ‘come home’ for tournament favourites England.
The German stands as a more rogue shout than the three above, but Sané’s numbers in a stuttering Bayern Munich side still make for impressive reading.
Only five players managed more than his 11 assists in the German top-flight, and with Germany lacking a clear ‘number nine’ this summer, Julian Nagelsmann will be reliant on contributions from wider areas if they are to enjoy their first home tournament since 2006.
While the 28-year-old’s Germany career has stalled as of late, both through suspension and injuries, Sané’s quality means he rightly remains renowned as one of the nation’s top players heading into the tournament.
He will also want to prove a point after his club’s lacklustre performance on the domestic front, and could raise a few eyebrows with his efforts in Germany this summer.
