Borussia Dortmund hope to overturn a one-goal deficit to reach their first Champions League semi-final in eleven years as they host Atletico Madrid on Tuesday evening.

Atletico hold a 2-1 lead from the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano, with Sebastien Haller’s late strike giving Der BVB hope of a comeback. Kick-off at the Signal Iduna Park is set for 8pm UK time.

Recent Form

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund’s form in the Champions League this season has been very inconsistent, with just four wins in their nine games in the competition this season so far, including only two wins at home.

However, Edin Terzic’s side are unbeaten at home in the competition this season, with their defence becoming key to their success in a very difficult run to this point, keeping three clean sheets so far.

Dortmund have only conceded once in their four home games - a solitary strike from Warren Zaire-Emery in the final group game vs Paris Saint Germain at the end of last year. Dortmund also boast a wide array of goalscorers in this season’s tournament, with their eleven goals shared across nine different players so far. Karim Adeyemi and Marco Reus both have two each.

Dortmund’s record against Atletico is mixed, with just two wins in their five meetings, although that does include a 4-0 victory in the last meeting at the Signal Iduna Park by in 2018.

Atletico Madrid

Atletico continued their seamless home run in this season’s Champions League with last week’s first leg victory, making it five wins from five home games so far, with 15 goals scored and just four conceded.

Diego Simeone’s side, however, have struggled away from home so far, winning just once away to Feyenoord in the group stage. That run includes a late defeat at Inter Milan in the Round of 16, and a 2-2 draw away at bottom club Celtic in Group E.

Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata have formed a brilliant partnership over the season in all competitions, and that has translated into success in Europe, with the pair contributing to 11 of Atletico’s 21 goals in the competition so far, while Samuel Lino brought his tally in Europe this season to three with another goal in the first leg.

The partnrship has seen Simeone's men overperform their expected goals tally of 13.9 with 21 scored this season, the biggest difference in the entire competition.

Prediction

Predicting a winner here is almost impossible. Relying on the two teams’ performances from the first leg to predict this would be inaccurate to say the least, as it is clear both sides are well-suited to playing at home, which could play into Dortmund hands.

Seeing as Dortmund have struggled to score in this season’s Champions League but are more than capable defensively, while Atletico have struggled away from home in Europe but also have a lead to sit on, a low scoring affair could be on the cards here.
