Big fight analysis

Cast your minds back 19 years and you'll remember Mike Tyson, or what was left of him, getting pummelled by Kevin McBride at the MCI Center in Washington.

The result made it three losses in four fights for the American, who had been stopped inside four by British heavyweight Danny Williams in his previous contest.

The truth of the matter is that, even then, Tyson was a shadow of his former self and unable to replicate the rip-roaring beatdowns he was once synonymous with during the early stages of his career.

Now, at 58-years-old, he is being thrown back into the ring to face a young, fresh and conditioned fighter who is 31 years his junior.

Sure, Jake Paul is a raw novice boxer at best, but has devoted the last six or seven years of his life honing his craft and has surely never been in better shape than he is right now.

That alone makes this fight a dangerous one for Iron Mike.

The bout is set for eight, two-minute rounds and will, bizarrely, be listed on the professional records of both men.

Paul already boasts, if you can call it that, victories over other icons of the combat sport world.

The former Disney Channel star holds two victories over MMA legend Tyron Woodley, the second of which saw the latter laid out in six rounds.

He also dropped former UFC star Anderson Silva en route to a comfortable eight-round decision, before going on to out-point Nate Diaz in August last year.

Paul's only loss came in arguably his only competitive professional bout to date - an eight-round split-decision defeat to Tommy Fury in February 2023.

And yet he still enters a sizeable favourite against one of the sport's most recognisable faces.

Why? Because 'Father Time' is undefeated, and he already had his hand raised against Tyson almost two decades ago.

Odds Now's best bet

It goes without saying that if Paul was to face anything resembling a prime version of Iron Mike, then this fight would be over in quick and brutal fashion.

Yet the latter is approaching his sixties and has not fought, at least in a professional capacity, since the defeat to McBride way back in 2005.

The inevitable physical decline which comes as a natural part of the ageing process, which has no doubt been exacerbated by his regular abuse of cigarettes and recreational drugs, could make for a difficult watch for those in love with the 'sweet science' on Saturday morning.

As the cliche goes, boxing is a young man's game, and Paul's youth coupled with genuine athleticism means he stands as the sensible pick for this one.

4/6 is a more than fair price considering all the variables, but given the disparity in age, a Paul win inside the distance at 6/4 is also worth a punt.
